Activities carried out in Italy

• Organise awareness-raising events, such as talks in schools and much more.
• Organise fundraising events.
• Support the initiatives that have been devised.
• Spread the word within your network about the charity and its work in Italy.
• Suggest and put forward new ideas that could help achieve our objectives.
• Prepare documents and reports to ensure that activities are carried out smoothly.

Vocation, involvement and spirit of adaptation

Choosing to set off onan international volunteering experience based on solidarity, immersing oneself in a different culture and realising that one is a guest in a region with its own traditions, means embarking on a journey of personal growth within groups of volunteers, feeling an active part of a specific project.

Strawberry Fields Onlus organizes and promotes volunteer projects in Ethiopia, between Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. During the direct experience in the field volunteers are asked and helped to assist the local population, providing any kind of support, from education to basic human needs.

Resources that cannot be missed in anticipation of travel:

• Sharing the organisation’s core values, as well as its mission and activities.
• An interest in issues relating to international solidarity.
• An open mind, personal flexibility and the ability to question one’s own assumptions.
• A strong ability to adapt, particularly to the living conditions you will find yourself in.
• Respect for cultural diversity.
• Motivation, energy and positivity.

Testimonials

“It all started something like this: I’d always wanted to do some voluntary work in Africa, and when I was faced with the decision of whether to go or not, even though I was a bit scared, I didn’t hesitate and booked a flight to Addis Ababa.
I spent three weeks at the orphanage run by the Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta in Asco, alongside nearly 200 children aged between 2 and 18. It’s not easy to put this experience into words; nothing I could write could ever compare to experiencing it first-hand.
Without a doubt, the greatest source of satisfaction and what truly warms your heart when you return home are the memories of all the smiling children you’ve helped or with whom you’ve simply shared a smile. Spending your days with them is overwhelming; the bond with the children is strong and it’s hard not to fall so deeply in love with them. Whatever activity you do together is a moment of happiness for everyone; seeing their joy and curiosity just at the thought of holding a felt-tip pen to colour with fills your heart.
These little children have made me reflect on the true value of life, and when you realise that what you receive is more important than what you give, the only thing on your mind is wondering when you’ll be able to set off again."

“My wife Julie and I went with Strawberry Fields Onlus to Ethiopia in the summer of 2018 to visit the Abune Andreas orphanage in Dire Dawa. What impressed me so much was the strength of these young ladies.
The strength of their faith, the strength of their pursuit of knowledge, and more importantly, the strength of support they have for each other. It was humbling to see young people without a family and without many basic resources have such a love of life and one another.
They were so appreciative of our time and supplies that we brought. One memory I have is when I was walking through a small village where it was clear I was the only one visible that came from another continent. As people came running up to me, I was soon surrounded closely by people talking a language I didn’t understand.
One of the orphan girls realized I was apprehensive". She said, “ You will be fine, hold my hand and walk with me”. If any one is deserving of our time and support, it is these girls”.

Together with other strawberryfields volunteers I’ve been to Ethiopia three times in the last few years. Each visit was a unique experience and it’s something I’m planning to do many more times in the upcoming years. It’s amazing to see what the help of strawberryfields has done to the girls orphanage in Dire Dawa.
Because of their help the girls get very good education and housing what will help them to get a better future. For the next years I want to remain part of the team of volunteers and help strawberryfields accomplish more projects.

Magical. Uplifting. Joyful.
These were the feelings I had when I left the girls orphanage in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia run by the Catholic Church Abune Andreas. Yes an orphanage! These 40 girls ages 10 to 19 were their own happy family and functioned as community in a very organized fashion. Their bonds and connections are tightly bound by their common situation and the consistent mentoring from devoted Emmebeth Mischel and help from Diva‘s nonprofit Strawberry Fields Onlus emphasizing the importance of education and the ripple effect in life.
I believe these young women know they can have a better life, a different life, and they have the choice if they work for it.
The most powerful moment for me was the listening to children sing during mass. I felt the songs of the angels vibrate within me. Please support Strawberry Fields Onlus - an advantage for those who have none
